Medicare counselor training

Training steps

Once you are a SHIBA counselor-in-training, you will need to complete the following (in any order):

  • Online training modules
  • 10-hour internship
  • New counselor training
    • Training topics are relevant to new and certified counselors, community partners, and other people who serve Medicare-eligible clients.
    • Day two of the in-person training is now six free continuing education credits for licensed insurance agents in Oregon.

Detailed training information will be sent after you complete the application and are approved to be a new counselor. Please allow five to seven business days for application processing.

After training is complete

Once you complete the training steps, you are a certified SHIBA counselor.

  • You will work under a SHIBA coordinator.
  • You must attend volunteer meetings to remain an active volunteer.
  • Contact your coordinator with questions about your training.
  • Your coordinator may request a certificate of completion, name badge, and business cards for your use.
